Samoyed Exercising Needs
The Samoyed is an intelligent and highly active breed of dog. It needs regular exercise in order to prevent boredom and restlessness which can result in the destruction of its owner’s property. This breed of dog likes interacting with its owners as well as its environment. It likes going on long walks and chasing after things, possibly because it is a natural herder.
A daily exercise session of about 2 hours not only keeps the adult Samoyed dog fit but keeps it entertained. Activities like cart-pulling and a delightful game of fetch should also be included in the dog’s routine. This is because the Samoyed is a breed that likes to be useful. Regular engagement in a range of suitable activities with its owner builds the bond between dog and human; thereby boosting the Samoyed’s emotional and psychological health. Also, in the course of exercising, the Samoyed can be taught how to obey commands from an early age. Commands like “Settle”, “Stop”, “Fetch” and “Sit” can be properly tested during the Samoyed’s exercise or playtime. This way, training and lessons that the dog has learned during its obedience sessions can be properly reinforced.
Exercise needs vary from Samoyed to Samoyed, depending on the age. The standard requirement is to take the dog on walks of duration of 5 minutes for every month of its life, twice a day. That means that a two-month old dog should be allowed to go on 10 minutes walks two times daily. However, the Samoyed is an active and strong breed and so, it is likely to do well with longer durations of exercise. Nonetheless, during the early stages of the dog’s life (i.e ages 0-6 months), the Samoyed should not be overtly exercised; as its bones are still developing and should be treated with proper care.
