Samoyed Bathing Grooming Guidelines
Grooming is very important in dog-care. It is advisable that owners of long-haired breeds like the Samoyed take their time to brush their dog’s coat regularly. This should be done every day since the Samoyed’s thick, fuzzy white coat can get matted or tangled easily. If that doesn’t happen, regular brushing would still make the Samoyed’s coat manageable. While brushing gets dead hairs and caked dirt out of the Samoyed’s coat, distributing the oils on the dog’s skin along the way, you can’t get all the dirt out with this method. No matter how often you brush your dog’s coat, some dead hairs will still linger. Things begin to accumulate. If the Samoyed gets caught in the rain or somehow manages to get wet while all these things are happening, it starts to stink. Then, all bets are off.
The Samoyed needs a bath. The question of how often a Samoyed dog should be bathed remains subjective though the general consensus is at least once a month. Some people tell you that it’s at least once every three months for older Samoyed and once every six months for the younger breed. But sometimes, your Samoyed finds a puddle and decides to have fun playing in it. Sometimes, it’s not even a puddle; it’s something else that smells suspiciously like tuna oil. In these cases, you don’t wait for next month before you give the dog a bathing session. The Samoyed simply needs to be bathed. Immediately.
Nevertheless, moderation should apply. Hurling your Samoyed into the bathtub after every outdoor adventure isn’t actually necessary, as overtly frequent bath-times will strip the dog’s coat of its protective natural oils, damaging the integrity of the hairs on its double-layered coat; which would be bad for the Samoyed.
So, if the dog doesn’t stink, and dirt isn’t sticking to the wet cloth or towel (preferably white in color) that you use in cleaning its coat, it’s safe to assume that your Samoyed’s bath-time can wait another day.
