Samoyed Appearance
The Samoyed is a medium-sized breed of dogs with long, fuzzy white coats, which may also occur in cream and biscuit colors; though, these are less common. They have a double- layer coat which is odorless and does not have the usual doggy odor that some other breeds are perpetually saddled with. The only time a Samoyed’s coat is likely to smell is when its fur is wet or when it has been dirty for a long time. The dog should also not have any mouth odor if it is healthy and its hygiene is properly handled.
The upper coat sheds heavily and its fur is sometimes collected by the owner and spun into an alternative to wool, which is strong and warm. The Samoyed’s fur should not be shaved for this purpose, however, as it can expose the dog to harsh weather conditions and make it even more vulnerable to parasites and infections. Shaving the upper layer of the Samoyed’s coat can also damage the integrity of the lower coat.
The Samoyed is a spitz dog which means that it belongs to the group of dogs bearing significant genetic similarities with wolves. Like all spitz dogs, the Samoyed possesses a fox-like face, pointed ears and a tail that curls over its back; among other attributes.
The breed’s size typically ranges from 17 inches to 25 inches for both male and female adult. Sometimes, the Samoyed may also be slightly bigger or smaller than the stated range. Although, height may not be an issue in the process of pet selection for companionship, it is often seen a factor during the judging process in dog shows.
The dog is able to move its lips upward to form a delightful smile that is commonly called the “Samoyed Smile” or “Sammy Smile”. This is a testament of how jovial the Samoyed is. Its face is also able to express the usual range of visible canine emotions such as boredom and befuddlement.
