Personality and Behavioral Traits of the Samoyed Dog

PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIORAL TRAITS OF THE SAMOYED DOG

The Samoyed dog generally has a lovely personality. It is generally sociable and friendly but alert; this is a common behavior with herd dogs or original herd dog breeds like the Samoyed. The Samoyed dog is able to watch out for animals it herds, scout for danger and make sure no one falls behind. But in the absence of animals to herd – reindeers, in the Samoyed’s case – it will focus all its love and attention on its human owners.

This dog breed was basically made for cuddling and they used to provide warmth for their ancient owners in old Europe. It is loyal, playful, intelligent and it likes attention. It also has a reputation of protecting what belongs to it, including its humans, although many Samoyed dogs limit their guarding activities to barking at their owners’ visitors. They belong to a very friendly breed after all.
Another thing this breed has a reputation for is the “Sammie Smile”. The Samoyed dog can curve its features into a great smile, and that is not all. It can also pull off a few common dog facial expressions such as “bored”.

On the possibly negative side, the Samoyed dog is known to be stubborn. It has a mind of its own and it likes to chase things; stray cats, deer, you name it. It has an independent streak that quickly morphs into disobedience when the dog is improperly trained from an early age, and it has a tendency to bark. People say that this breed has a sense of humor, which makes it pretty great for companionship. This also means that it is quite mischievous.

The Samoyed is a breed that was originally used to herd reindeer and pull sledges across cold regions in Europe. It loves the outdoors especially in the cold; couple this with its sense of mischief and activeness, and you’re bound to have trouble in your living space if you forget to walk your Samoyed for too long.
