The Samoyed is a fascinating breed of dogs that is beloved by many people across the world. If you’ve ever come across one before, you’ve definitely had your interest piqued by these medium-sized darlings. The following are a list of FIVE interesting facts that you may not know about the Samoyed breed.

1. ORIGINS IN SYBERIA.

That’s right! This breed of dogs hails from one of the coldest regions in Europe and they are renowned for dragging sledges across cold terrains for the Samoyedic natives. Not only that, but Samoyeds were used by the natives to herd reindeers. They were also used to provide warmth by transference of body heat during cuddling. And till date, these medium-sized dogs are able to do well in cold weather thanks to their double-layered coat.

2. THEY BELONG TO THE SPITZ BREED.

This means that Samoyeds are part of the group of dogs that has a fox-like face, pointed ears and a tail that curls over its back. This group of dogs is closely related to wolves.

3. KNOWN FOR THEIR SMILE.

Samoyeds are able to manipulate muscles of their face, particularly around their lips, to form a smile popularly known as the “Sammy Smile”. This is just one of the many testaments of the breed’s good nature and personality.

4. ODOURLESS.

Samoyeds don’t stink like some of the other breeds of dogs. This also means that they don’t have to be bathed as often. Regular brushing of their coat is still required to keep out tangles and mats, as well as to spread natural oils on their skin (among other reasons). But due to the Samoyed’s general lack of odor, bathing may not be required as often; only about once every three months for older dogs, and once every six months for younger dogs.

5. ABILITY TO SING.

Samoyeds are closely related to wolves genetically, and this might be why they are able to howl. They will howl when you play them some music or when you sing, and sometimes, they’ll even howl when you leave.
